Father of the Bride Speech Tips to Help You on the Big Day
If you are a father of a prospective bride then you may benefit from some tips to help you when you are writing the speech for the big day. Because the father of the bride is traditionally the first one to deliver his speech, he can set the tone for the rest of the evening. It will not do to the pile the pressure on, but this can be the most important speech to get the rest of the festivities off on the right foot.
Father of the bride speech tips are of two sorts. One set of tips are to do with help in public speaking and the other set of tips are to help you to decide what to say.
Public speaking itself is a daunting affair. Just getting up in front of a room full of people to deliver a speech, no matter how long, can make the strongest of us go weak at the knees. But wait a minute, this cannot really be thought of as ‘public speaking’ can it? If you think about the people who will be there, probably a small handful of them will be unknown to you. It will be a roomful of your own family, your wife, kids and relatives, and the same for your new son-in-law.
A good tip is to make eye contact with one person and imagine that you are just talking to that one person. This can make you seem more relaxed and your speech will come across in a much more friendly way.
In life, there is nothing better than being prepared. The same goes for your speech. Prepare it well in advance and then practice it as often as you can. This way, you will have said it so many times that it will seem like an old familiar friend and when you come to deliver it, it will trip naturally off your tongue. An important tip here is to practice it out loud, not just silently or to yourself. By actually saying it out loud, you can time it better and know which parts of it need improving.
Say it out loud to someone else. This can help you enormously. Someone less objective will be able to tell you if you are getting too mushy or if any of the jokes seem to be inappropriate. When writing your jokes do not forget the age range of the people there. If there are teenagers and upwards, then you can afford to be a bit more risqué, but if there are to be small children present, or older, stuffier relatives, then keep the tone level and far away from any embarrassing stories.
Stand up straight. Take notes in with you if you need them. Don’t forget, this is not a test of your skill, this is a happy occasion and everyone is looking to you to let them know how you feel and to toast the bride and groom in their new life together. So, that’s almost everything I wanted to say as father of the bride speech tips. Have fun, you deserve it!
