How To Make Your Daughter Proud With A Great Father of The Bride Speech

Seeing a daughter get married can be a very special day in the life of a father. The father of the bride may be called upon to give a speech, perhaps at an event prior to the wedding or at the wedding reception. It is wise to anticipate this speech and prepare in advance for it. If you are the father, you might be rather emotional when the time comes, so if you have something prepared, you’ll be ready for it and can say what you really want to communicate.

That said, father of the bride speeches should not be read from a paper, as it may not appear as heartfelt as when a father speaks free of notes. Instead, practice the speech ahead of time so that you know all of the main points you want to say and can do so without looking at a paper. If you are nervous about the speech, practice it with your wife or a friend.

When you have an opportunity to make your speech, keep it short and to the point. The main idea is to communicate your pride and love in your daughter, not to recount every memory or major event since childhood.

Here are some pointers for a great father of the bride speech -

  • Congratulate your daughter and new son-in-law on their marriage.
  • Compliment your daughter on how beautiful she is and how proud you are of her.
  • Share a brief story about your daughter that identifies a positive trait that she brings to the marriage, such as her love and devotion for her new husband. Do this without embarrassing her or her husband and without revealing anything that would be considered too personal to share in public.
  • A father can be expected to provide sage advice, so take the opportunity to do so in a kind and encouraging manner. This is not a time to point out a problem in the couple’s relationship, but rather a chance to provide a general insight into life and marriage. For example, a father might encourage the couple to rely on their faith in difficult times.
  • If the mother of the bride is not making a speech, the father may include the bride’s mother in his comments with her permission, for example by saying your mother and I want to congratulate you.
  • Conclude your speech by expressing your love for your daughter, your joy in her happiness and conveying your best wishes to the couple.

And that’s pretty much everything about your father of the bride speech.
