Your Duties and Responsibilities as the Father of the Bride
As the father of the bride you have what may seem like endless duties to fulfill before the wedding, during the wedding, during the reception, and yes, even sometimes after the wedding (the bill). Traditionally the bride’s side of the family has much more responsibilities than the groom’s side, but in the modern world, things have evened out a bit.
It’s him who pays the money
Traditionally the bride’s family pays for the wedding ceremony and some of the reception, while the groom’s family will pay for the rehearsal dinner and the beverages at the reception. More modernly though, the bride and groom will be in charge of the wedding expenses and the parents will pitch in and help.
Giving away his daughter
As the father of the bride, he has had the responsibility of his daughter all her life. On her wedding day, the father now “gives his daughter away” to the groom, as a transfer of responsibilities. The groom is now responsible of caring and providing for her.
The formal host pf the wedding
The father and mother of the bride traditionally act as the hosts of the wedding ceremony and reception. They should mingle and accommodate all guests to make them feel comfortable and welcomed.
The father of the bride speech
The father of the bride traditionally speaks first at the wedding reception. Thus the father of the bride speech, being the inaugural speech of the evening has it’s own unique appeal. He welcomes everyone, speaks about his daughter, invites the son-in-law into the family, and gives the new couple advice about marriage.
The father-daughter dance
The dance is more of an honor than a responsibility. At the reception there is traditionally a father daughter dance in which you and the bride will dance to your father-daughter song. This could be a song of special importance as she was growing up, or just both of your favorite songs.
