Father of the Bride Speech Ideas

So, your daughter is getting married and as the father of the bride, your speech comes first.  You might have done this before or you might be totally unprepared because you have no idea what to say.  Well, you’re in luck because here are plenty of ideas for your father of the bride speech.

The best man will introduce you as the father of the bride and your speech starts the festivities for the reception.  It also opens the floor to other speeches. Depend on the type of wedding you’re having you may want to try some of these ideas.

Of course, the first thing to say is the welcome of your new son-in-law to your family.  You may want to include any special thanks to those who worked hard to make the perfect wedding.  If you want, you can point them out and say a few words about them and how they helped.

Then you can continue your speech with some of the following depending on your personality.

 Welcome and Wishes

  • Most people will know who you are but it’s best to introduce yourself just in case.
  • Thank the guests for coming, especially the ones who came long distances.
  • Mention a few humorous incidents the day has had and highlight some beautiful moments.
  • Add a bit of marriage advice if it fits well.
  • This helps break the ice and relaxes you and the guests.  Just a sentence or two is fine.

Speech Ideas about the Bride

  • Compliment the bride on how beautiful, radiant or lovely she looks.  Refrain from using the word “today”.  It implies she looks terrible the rest of the time.
  • Show, if you can, the love and pride you have for your daughter and highlight your very special relationship.  Use a little teasing with funny remarks about her character, hobbies, or achievements, Avoid clichés and always be a gentleman.
  • Tell some silly stories about your daughter when she was little or whom she wanted to marry when she was 5 years old.
  • You might want to reveal her pre-wedding years before she meet her husband.
  • Tell some stories about how you saw her relationship grow with her new husband.
  • Conclude this part by telling your daughter how proud you are of her and what she’s accomplished.

Include Your New Son-In-Law

  • Include your new son-in-law with stories of how you meet him and other amusing anecdotes.
  • Describe his looks and your first impression of him.
  • Share your relationship with him, your interests the both of you share, and something that surprised you about him.
  • Tell how much you look forward to getting to know him better, if this applies.
  • Mention what the families have in common.
  • Conclude with a bit about his character, hobbies, passions and achievements.

The “Thank You's “

  • As the father of the bride, it’s your responsible to thank everyone who made the wedding perfect.
  • Don’t forget to thank the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom.
  • Refer to the maid of honor and bridesmaids, how beautiful they are and how much you appreciate their efforts.
  • Thank the clergy, priest, or minister.
  • Thank everyone who has help with the wedding.
  • Use a humorous remark about those who helped with the financing of the wedding.
  • Mention the flowers, the hall and anything else you can think of for making the wedding beautiful.

Conclude Your Father of the Bride Speech

  • End your speech with a toast to the bride and groom --Their health, success, and happiness in the future.

Extras

  • You might want to mention where the buffet is as well as the drinks.
  • Also mention if there’s a cash bar or not.
  • Mention anything that will be helpful to the guests so they can enjoy the wedding festivities without worries.

Now, don’t add all these ideas to your father of the bride speech.  If you do, your speech will take 2 hours.  Just add the ones that will be appropriate for your daughters wedding.  And you only need to use a sentence or two for each idea.

After writing out your father of the bride speech ideas then rehearse what you’re going to say so it flows naturally.  You can use notes or an outline so you don’t forget anything.
