Maid of Honor Duties and Responsibilities

Dear Maid of Honor,

First off, I would like to say, congratulations on being chosen as the Maid of Honor for your sister’s/best friend’s/childhood friend’s wedding!  It is really a great honor to be the Maid of Honor.  This means you have a special place in the bride’s heart, and she most likely has a place in yours as well.

As we all know, with honor comes more responsibilities. As the Maid of Honor, you are responsible for assisting the bride with many tasks, as well as plan some duties without the bride.  As the Maid of Honor you are traditionally responsible for many things, but if you feel too overwhelmed, do not be afraid to ask for assistance.

Maid of Honor Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Assist in addressing invitations - You and the bridesmaids should help the bride address and send all announcements, invitations, and thank you cards.
  • Host a Bridal Shower - Prepare, organize, and host a bridal shower that is full of fun and screams, “You’re getting married.”  Involve the mother of the bride in this as well.
  • Organize bridesmaids- Make sure they are aware of their fitting appointments, hair appointments, make-up appointments, and what they will be paying for.
  • Plan the Bachelorette Party - Plan a night of fun for the bride, and let her have a say in what happens. –Don’t force her to do things she doesn’t want to.
  • Be Bride’s right hand on the big day - Be supportive for the bride and reassure her if she is nervous.  Try keeping her calm and stress free, she should be enjoying herself.
  • Arrive early on the big day to assist bride & bridesmaids - Arrive at least 2 hours early to make sure everything is playing out right.  Assist the bride or bridesmaids in every way possible.
  • Wedding Coordinator (if one is not hired) - Hopefully one is hired, if not your responsibilities just doubled!  Make sure EVERYONE knows where to be, you are pretty much in charge.
  • Hold her bouquet during ceremony (and bustle dress)- You stand next to the bride at the altar and hold her bouquet during the ceremony.  You are also in charge o bustling her dress.
  • Witness and sign Marriage Certificate - You are a witness of the marriage and have the honor of signing the Marriage Certificate after the ceremony.
  • The Maid of Honor Wedding Reception Speech - This is a HUGE responsibility.  You need to plan out your Maid of Honor Speech as soon as possible because you won’t have much time as the wedding gets closer.  Prepare your Maid of Honor speech, Rewrite it, and Practice it.
  • Take Care of the Bride’s Dress when the day is done - The bride is going off to her honeymoon, so you are in charge of taking the dress to her house or to the cleaners (wherever she wishes).

The maid of honor duties and responsibilities can be quite overwhelming. The biggest tip is to stay organized and DO NOT procrastinate.  Keep lists of things you are in charge of, always have a list of bridesmaids phone numbers, and know all the friends and family members the bride wants involved in things other than the wedding.  Keep the communication between you and the bride open, and try to be available to her every need.

And finally, don't forget about your maid of honor speech. Take some time out of your schedule and prepare for the wedding speech that you have to deliver at the wedding reception.
